The heart does not respond to principles and programs; it seeks not efficiency, but passion. Art, poetry, beauty, mystery, ecstasy:  These are what rouse the heart. Indeed, they are the language that must be spoken if one wishes to communicate with the heart. It is why Jesus so often taught and related to people by telling stories and asking questions. His desire was not just to engage their intellects, but to capture their hearts.

You know what I long for, Lord; You hear my every sigh.

Our true self-in-Christ is the only self that will support authenticity. It and it alone provides an identity that is eternal. Finding that unique self is, as noted by Thomas Merton, the problem on which all our existence, peace and happiness depend. Nothings is more important, for if we find our true self we find God, and if we find God, we find our most authentic self.

Christ's work, both in the church and in the hearts of Christians, often goeth backward that it may go the better forward. As seed roots in the ground in the winter time, but after comes better up, and the harder the winter the more flourishing the spring; So we learn to stand by falls, and get strength by weakness discovered--we take deeper root by shaking.

We can enter into a process of spiritual formation that will result in the forming of the life and character of Christ within our heart. It's all about being willing to fall in love.

The more genuine and the deeper our community becomes, the more will everything else between us recede, the more clearly and purely will Jesus Christ and His work become the one and only thing that is vital between us. We have one another only through Christ, but through Christ we do have one another, wholly, and for eternity.
